Cotswold Organic Chickens An older traditional meat bird, reared to full Soil Association standards. Being an older more traditional bird, when oven ready they are of an oval shape rather than the more modern square shape. They originate from the Cornish game bird of 1950's although the genetics have been bred to produce a bird who can cope with the 21st century. The birds are brought to the farm, having been hatched elsewhere, at a few hours old. They are housed in groups of 60 birds to each house. The day old chicks have a heat lamp in the house to provide them with warmth whilst also allowing them to perform there normal activities. As they grow they are allowed out on the range to enjoy grazing grass, scratching the soil investigating for many different creepy crawlies. This is where they live until they are taken to the on farm killing facility. Modern birds can be finished within 5 weeks, our birds are reared for between 12 and 14 weeks. This allows the bird to develop slowly which adds to the flavour of the meat produced. Our chickens are feed a quality organic feed specially produced to allow them to develop at a slow rate. All birds are hung in a cold store for three days to allow the meat to mature and the tendering process to develop. The birds are then ready for customers to purchase and enjoy. |
